This past Spring Break, three BGGA students – Yukie Sasaki, Luigi Paolo Wong, and Luca Jumabhoy – were awarded a #SB2K16 of their own. The three earned the opportunity to travel to Scotland for a once in a lifetime golf trip. These students earned the privilege by winning the International Junior Golf Tour’s Inaugural Race to Scotland. The Race to Scotland is a Fed-Ex Cup style event made up of 8 events over 8 months. The top 3 in order of merit, earning points on their net score, were awarded an all-expenses paid trip to Scotland.
The trip included private, luxury accommodation overlooking and located just steps from the famed Gullane No. 1 (the site of the 2015 Scottish Open won by Rickie Fowler), rounds of golf at some of Scotland’s most historic courses, and tours of iconic tourist attractions like Edinburgh Castle and North Berwick Law.
Within hours of landing in Scotland, the students had tees in the ground and golf balls airborne on Gullane No. 2. From there each day featured a new, different course.
These courses included Gullane No. 1, Archerfield Fidra and Dirleton Links and North Berwick West Course (12th oldest links course in the world). Saving the best for last, the students got to play at the Home of Golf – The Old Course at St. Andrews – and all but one finished with a birdie on the famed 18th hole, into the heart of the “old toon”!
Some trip highlights included best ball matches between the students and accompanying coaches, Luigi’s even par round from the back tees at the Old Course, Luca holing out for birdie from a pot bunker so deep his playing partners could not see him in it and Yukie shooting under par on a very cold day with winds gusting over 35 mph at North Berwick Golf Club.
The students returned home with countless pictures and memories sure to last a lifetime.
