Over the weekend, 20 Bishops Gate Golf Academy students competed in two events, one hosted by the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour at Red Tail Golf Club and the other hosted by the American Junior Golf Association at Ocala Golf Club. 15 students represented BGGA at the HJGT Major Championship at Red Tail, and five students competed in the first of five AJGA events sponsored by BGGA.
On the other side of the Atlantic, BGGA student Robin Williams played in the Callaway Junior World Qualifier in the United Kingdom. With an incredible 70-71-141 tournament total, Robin claimed a first-place finish.
Tom Broxup claimed a second-place finish in the Boys 15-18 Division of the HJGT Major Championship at Red Tail with an incredible bogey-free second round. Tom started the tournament with a 2-under-par first round, and closed his tournament weekend with an eagle and two birdies on his final nine holes. In the Boys 13-14 Division, Tristan Galant fired five birdies in his second round to come back and claim a third-place finish.
Also in the Boys 15-18 Division, Carlos Marrero brought home a T6 finish after shooting even-par in his second round, and Lucas Echeverri shot a 1-over-par 73 second round to claim a T14 finish. Despite a difficult second round, Jordi Sabria fought hard to hold on to a T17 finish in his division.
In the Girls 15-18 Division at the HJGT Major Championship at Red Tail Golf Club, Mami Yamamoto shot a 1-over-par second round to claim a T7 finish alongside fellow BGGA student Margaret Liu. Playing her first tournament of the year, Margaret shot one-better in her final round to hold on to her T7 finish.
At the Bishops Gate Golf Academy Preseason Junior at Ocala, tricky winds made for difficult scoring conditions at Ocala Golf Club. Despite these difficult conditions, BGGA full-timer Francisco Maciel improved his first-round score by three shots and claimed a T14 finish. Tsukasa Kimishima improved his first-round score by 8 shots to claim a T19 finish.
Director of Golf Kevin Smeltz’s student Sue Kim claimed her second career victory on the Symetra Tour. Coming into the final round three shots off the lead, she carded 4 birdies on her front-nine, including a 25-footer on the ninth, to make the turn at 5-under-par. This gave her a one-shot lead, and she never looked back.
