The Bishops Gate Golf Academy coaching staff boasts an unrivalled combination of experience and success. Not only do we have an outstanding track record in junior golf development, but our coaches have also achieved success with players at all levels of the game. We know what it takes to train Major winners, USGA champions, NCAA Champions, and AJGA Players of the Year. Most importantly, the coaches at BGGA are passionate about transmitting that same knowledge and experience to the students at our academy.

Kevin Smeltz

Kevin Smeltz

Director of Golf

Kevin Smeltz’ passion is the development of junior golfers and as such he was thrilled to bring his wealth of experience to BGGA. Since joining, he has set about building the team of highly skilled professionals he is proud to introduce to you today.

Working with some of the best in the game including Nick Price, Charles Howell III, and Na Yeon Choi, Kevin knows what it takes to produce a winner. Although he still works with several professional tour players, Kevin’s heart is in junior golf. While under his instruction, Kevin’s players have won 20 tournaments on the PGA Tour, Champions Tour, and LPGA Tour. Kevin has taught two U.S. Walker Cup team members, two No. 1-ranked college players, a No. 2-ranked college player, and many top-ranked juniors. Kevin has been awarded many accolades including voted one of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers (2012-Present) and regularly contributes to golf magazines around the world.

Scott Shaffer

Scott Shaffer

Master Coach

Scott Shaffer is a senior coach at Bishops Gate Golf academy. He is one of three POD leaders and on the golf management board. He is expert on Trackman and 3D Biomechanics and has spent time with Dr Rob Neal honing this expertise. He has a fluid approach to teaching and finds ways to adapt his style and information to suit the student. This has yielded great results including six FCWT 1st Team All Americans and two FCWT Player of the Year awards as well as a 100% percent college placement rate. Scott’s students have gained places at Florida State, Auburn, University of Georgia, University of Arkansas, Costal Carolina, University of Central Florida, Denver University and many more. He is a knowledgeable and a valuable member of team BGGA.

David Louys-Moroney

David Louys-Moroney

Senior Coach

David is the cosmopolitan of the BGGA team with 16 years teaching experience from nine countries around the world. David is a native from New Zealand and on completion of his New Zealand Professional Golfers Apprenticeship in 1997 played professionally on the Australian Sunshine Circuit. In developing his coaching knowledge, he worked in England, Ireland and then Slovenia where he was appointed National Development Coach. David took the role of Academy Director of the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Turkey then in South Korea. During his time in Korea, he was the coach of 4 KLPGA tournament winners. One of his students, Yun Ji CHO, won the 2010 KLPGA rookie of the year. David now brings his knowledge and unerring work ethic to BGGA and these qualities have quickly established him as a popular and valued member of the team.

Zach Parker

Zach Parker

Senior Coach

Zach Parker is a child centered coach and takes the greatest satisfaction in enabling students to achieve their dreams. Zach achieved the position of Director of Golf at GGGA early in his career. During his quest to learn and grow he gained his TPI Level Three certification in Golf Coaching & Junior Development and his K-Vest Level Two Science and Motion Certification. Zach’s passion to push those around him outside their comfort zone and allow the athlete to become their own best coach has allowed him the opportunity to coach 4 AJGA All American team members, two European Tour players and countless athletes who have and continue to represent their countries on an international level. Zach’s nurturing commitment to his players and his support of the BGGA team make him both a role model and a well-respected team player.

Nate Dougherty

Nate Dougherty

Senior Coach

Nate Dougherty is at the forefront of golf technology at BGGA. His knowledge and enthusiasm has been inspiring for the BGGA team and this has cemented the use of technology to support the progress of students. He has spent several winters teaching, training and playing in Florida while continuing to work summers as a club professional in Philadelphia. Nate spent 3 years working for Golf BioDynamics at Trump Doral in Florida, where he was able to specialize in 3D swing analysis and earning certifications from both Dr. Rob Neal and Jim McLean. Before arriving at Bishops Gate in 2015, Nate spent one year at IJGA in Hilton Head, SC providing 3D services for the academy. As an evidence based coach, Nate combines his competitive and professional experiences to create a training environment that enables players to maximize learning and skill development.

Drake Edmond

Drake Edmond

Senior Coach

Drake Edmond experienced early success by achieving accolades such as Rookie of the Year, LaPorte Herald Argus Golfer of the Year, 3 DAC All-Conference Player of the Year, 2 MVP awards and state finalist. Drake‘s passion for the game of golf led him to move to Florida where he went on to earn a degree in Golf Management from Professional Golfer’s Career College in 2011. His love for the game, competitive nature, and commitment to self-improvement was something he wanted to share with golfers of all levels. Drake served as an instructor at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy World Headquarters in Orlando, Florida. He has served as an instructor for Nike Golf Camps and is proficient in utilizing Sam Putt Lab, Trackman, force plates, and V1 analysis. Through his calm, supportive demeanor Drake develops each player to have confidence in themselves and the resilience needed to be a top junior golfer.

Nick Duffy

Nick Duffy

Senior Coach

Nick Duffy brings a passion for teaching and years of playing experience to BGGA. Nick grew up playing junior golf and qualified for the ‘98 and ‘99 U.S. Junior Championships. After a promising junior career, Nick went on to attend Northwood University and play on the golf team. After College Nick went on to play professional golf on the Hooters, Golden Bear and Gateways Tours. Prior to joining BGGA, Nick was a Head Coach at the Core Academy and at Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy. His achievements include coaching AJGA Champions and Elite Level Juniors and playing in 3 national championships while at Northwood University.

John Montgomery

John Montgomery

Assisstant Coach

John Montgomery brings 17 years of competitive golf experience to BGGA as an Assistant Coach. He attended Alabama State University on a full golf scholarship and earned a degree in Business Marketing. Some of John’s accomplishments at Alabama State include being named to the SWAC’s First Team All-Conference four times, 2009 SWAC Medalist and 2012 SWAC Champions. John also competed for more than two years on professional mini tours. John’s passion for life and high, positive energy level contributes to the atmosphere at BGGA.

Sue Kim

Sue Kim

Assistant Coach

Sue Kim is an Assistant Coach at Bishops Gate Golf Academy. She was a student of Kevin Smeltz for seven years and now assists him with coaching BGGA students. After turning professional in 2011, Sue played on the Symetra Tour for two years and recorded two wins. She then played on the LPGA Tour for four years before being sidelined by injury. Sue has always had a passion for coaching and knew BGGA was the place for her to turn after ending her professional career.

Karen Harrison

Karen Harrison

Director of Health and Athletic Development

Karen Harrison has an eye for detail and this is reflected in her meticulous fitness plans for BGGA students. Originally trained as a podiatrist, Karen studied at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, then at the University of Queensland to obtain a Post-Graduate Degree in Exercise Science majoring in Biomechanics. In 2004, Golf BioDynamics (GBD), the company jointly owned with husband Dr. Robert Neal, re-located to The Jim McLean Golf School in Miami, Florida (USA). Over the next decade, Karen further developed her golf skills, specializing in swing analysis, becoming proficient in BioFeedback Training and providing physical training programs for golfers. In 2014/2015, Karen assumed the role as Director of Health and Athletic Development with the IJGA team in Hilton Head (SC). She has joined the BGGA team in 2015 and has transformed the place of athletic development at BGGA.
