The Bishops Gate Golf Academy coaching staff boasts an unrivalled combination of experience and success. Not only do we have an outstanding track record in junior golf development, but our coaches have also achieved success with players at all levels of the game. We know what it takes to train Major winners, USGA champions, NCAA Champions and AJGA Players of the Year. Most importantly, the coaches at BGGA are passionate about transmitting that same knowledge and experience to the students at our academy.

Kevin Smeltz

Kevin Smeltz

Director of Golf

Kevin Smeltz’ passion is the development of junior golfers and as such he was thrilled to bring his wealth of experience to BGGA. Since joining, he has set about building the team of highly skilled professionals he is proud to introduce to you today.

Working with some of the best in the game including Nick Price, Charles Howell III and Na Yeon Choi, Kevin knows what it takes to produce a winner. Although he still works with several professional tour players, including Rolex Women’s Golf Rankings No. 8 Amy Yang, Kevin’s heart is in junior golf.

After graduating from the University of North Florida, where he received All-American Honors, and playing professionally for a brief time, Kevin decided to pursue a career in golf instruction. Kevin has held positions previously at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy and International Junior Golf Academy.

While under his instruction, Kevin’s players have won 22 tournaments on the PGA Tour, Champions Tour and LPGA Tour. He has coached players who have won on the European Tour, the Ladies European Tour, the KLPGA Tour as well as 20 wins on the JLPGA Tour. He has taught both men and women in the top 10 in the Rolex World Rankings including a major champion. Kevin coached five players who have qualified for the PGA tour who had no prior status on that tour as well as six on the Web.com Tour who also gained status after not having any status on that tour.

Kevin has taught two U.S. Walker Cup team members, two No. 1-ranked college players, a No. 2-ranked college player, two NCAA champions, two Curtis cup team members, as well as three players in the top 5 in the World Amateur Golf rankings (WAGR) and many top-ranked juniors.

Kevin has been awarded many accolades including voted one of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers (2012-Present), Golf Digest’s Best Teachers in Florida (2007-Present), Golf Digest’s Top 20 Teachers Under 40 (2007-2009) and Golf Digest’s Best Young Teacher (2010). He also regularly contributes to golf magazines around the world.

Scott Shaffer

Scott Shaffer is a senior coach at BGGA. Scott is an expert on Trackman and 3D Biomechanics and has spent time with BGGA Advisory Board member Dr. Rob Neal honing his expertise. He has a fluid approach to teaching and finds ways to adapt his style and information to suit the student. This approach has yielded great results including six FCWT 1st Team All-Americans, two FCWT Player of the Year awards as well as a 100% percent college placement rate. Scott’s students have gained places at Florida State, Auburn, University of Georgia, University of Arkansas, Coastal Carolina, University of Central Florida, Denver University and many more. He is a knowledgeable and a valuable member of team BGGA.

David Louys-Moroney

David Louys-Moroney

Senior Coach

David is the cosmopolitan of the BGGA team with 16 years teaching experience from nine countries around the world. David is from New Zealand and on completion of his New Zealand Professional Golfers Apprenticeship in 1997, he played professionally on the Australian Sunshine Circuit. In developing his coaching knowledge, he worked in England, Ireland and then Slovenia where he was appointed National Development Coach. David took the role of Academy Director of the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Turkey and then in South Korea. During his time in South Korea, he was the coach of four KLPGA tournament winners. One of his students, Yun Ji ChO, won the 2010 KLPGA Rookie of the Year. David brought his knowledge and unerring work ethic to BGGA and these qualities have quickly established him as a popular and valued member of the team.

Zach Parker

Zach Parker is a child-centered coach and takes the greatest satisfaction in enabling students to achieve their dreams. Zach achieved the position of Director of Golf at GGGA early in his career. During his quest to learn and grow, he gained his TPI Level III certification in Golf Coaching & Junior Development and his K-Vest Level II Science and Motion Certification. Zach’s passion to push those around him outside their comfort zone and allow the athlete to become their own best coach has allowed him the opportunity to coach four AJGA All-Americans, two European Tour players and countless athletes who have and continue to represent their countries on an international level. Zach’s nurturing commitment to his players and his support of the BGGA team make him both a role model and a well-respected team player.

Nate Dougherty

Nate Dougherty

Senior Coach

Nate Dougherty is at the forefront of golf technology at BGGA. His knowledge and enthusiasm has been inspiring for the BGGA team and this has cemented the use of technology to support the progress of students. Nate spent several winters teaching, training and playing in Florida while continuing to work summers as a club professional in Philadelphia. Nate spent three years working for Golf BioDynamics at Trump Doral in Florida, where he was able to specialize in 3D swing analysis and earning certifications from both Dr. Rob Neal and Jim McLean. Before arriving at Bishops Gate in 2015, Nate spent one year at IJGA in Hilton Head, SC providing 3D services for the academy. As an evidence based coach, Nate combines his competitive and professional experiences to create a training environment that enables players to maximize learning and skill development.

Drake Edmond

Drake Edmond experienced early success by achieving accolades such as Rookie of the Year, LaPorte Herald Argus Golfer of the Year, three-time DAC All-Conference Player of the Year, two-time MVP award winner and state finalist. Drake‘s passion for the game of golf led him to move to Florida where he went on to earn a degree in Golf Management from Professional Golfer’s Career College in 2011. His love for the game, competitive nature and commitment to self-improvement was something he wanted to share with golfers of all levels. Drake served as an instructor at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy World Headquarters in Orlando, Florida. He has served as an instructor for Nike Golf Camps and is proficient in utilizing Sam Putt Lab, Trackman, force plates and V1 analysis. Through his calm, supportive demeanor, Drake develops each player to have confidence in themselves and the resilience needed to be a top junior golfer.

Nick Duffy

Senior Coach

Nick Duffy brings a passion for teaching and years of playing experience to BGGA. Nick grew up playing junior golf and qualified for the ‘98 and ‘99 U.S. Junior Championships. After a promising junior career, Nick went on to play golf at Northwood University where he played in three national championships. After College Nick played professional golf on the Hooters, Golden Bear and Gateways Tours. Prior to joining BGGA, Nick was a Head Coach at Core Academy and at Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy. His achievements include coaching AJGA champions and elite-level juniors.

Keegan Fennessy

Keegan Fennessy

Coach

Keegan Fennessy joins BGGA with 20 years of competitive experience. Keegan began teaching more than 10 years ago and has five years of academy coaching experience. He’s taught players of all skill levels from beginners to professionals, including multiple AJGA champions. Keegan played professional golf from 2009 to 2011 on the NGA Hooters Tour. Prior to that, Keegan was his high school state champion in 2005, qualified for the 2006 U.S. Amateur Public Links and represented Maine in the 2009 USGA State Team Championship.

John Montgomery

Assisstant Coach

John Montgomery brings 17 years of competitive golf experience to BGGA as an Assistant Coach. He attended Alabama State University on a full golf scholarship and earned a degree in Business Marketing. Some of John’s accomplishments at Alabama State include being named to the SWAC’s First Team All-Conference four times, 2009 SWAC Medalist and 2012 SWAC Champions. John also competed for more than two years on professional mini tours. John’s passion for life and high, positive energy level contributes to the atmosphere at BGGA.

Kris Sirak

Kris Sirak

Master Club-Maker/Fitter and Assistant Coach

Kris Sirak brings his strong passion for the art of Custom Club-Making and enjoyment of working with junior golfers to BGGA. Kris came to BGGA in 2013 after working for another academy as well as a major golf retailer. He got his start in golf at the age of 13 as a junior golfer, setting numerous high school records and qualifying for the Maxfli Junior PGA Championship at PGA National Golf Club during his senior year. Kris went on to develop his skills in instruction and earn certifications from San Diego Golf Academy (AAB) Golf Properties Management, Trackman University (Certified Level 2 Professional), Flightscope Academy (Certified Professional), SAM Putt-lab Certified Instructor/Fitter, Golfsmith International GCA (Certified Master Club-Maker) and Certified Mitchell Club-Maker and Equipment Partner. Kris has worked with many professional golfers including Morgan Hoffman, Yani Tseng, Charles Howell III, D.A. Points, Suzann Pettersen, Shanshan Feng, Na Yeon Choi and Amy Yang just to name a few. Kris has been named a Certified Custom Club-Fitter by all of the following companies: Titleist, Ping, TaylorMade, Mizuno, Callaway, Cobra, Fourteen, Tour Edge, OBAN, Fujikura, Matrix and PXG.

Karen Harrison

Karen Harrison

Director of Health and Athletic Development

Karen Harrison has an eye for detail and this is reflected in the meticulous fitness assessments and improvement plans created for BGGA students. Originally trained as a podiatrist, Karen studied at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, then at the University of Queensland to obtain a Post-Graduate Degree in Exercise Science (majoring in Biomechanics). In 2004, Golf BioDynamics (GBD), the company jointly owned with husband Dr. Robert Neal, re-located to The Jim McLean Golf School in Miami, Florida (USA). Over the next decade, Karen further developed her golf skills, specializing in swing analysis, becoming proficient in BioFeedback Training and providing physical training programs for golfers of all abilities. In 2014/2015, Karen assumed the role as Director of Health and Athletic Development with the IJGA team in Hilton Head (SC) joining the BGGA team in 2015. The fitness program delivered alongside Performance Specialist Justin Smith, is of the highest quality and challenges our students to reach their athletic potential. Karen also has extensive experience in managing overuse injuries and recently completed a prestigious qualification in Sports Nutrition through the International Olympic Committee.

Justin Smith

Strength and Conditioning Coach

Justin Smith has been a Performance Specialist since 2009, working under world-renowned Strength and Conditioning coach Pat Etcheberry in the Orlando, Fla. area. He earned a Bachelor Degree in Kinesiology at the University of Kentucky (UK), as well as completing an internship in the Strength and Conditioning Department. While at UK, Justin was a diver on the Men’s Swimming and Diving team and an SEC finalist on multiple occasions. Drawing from his own athletic career, Justin brings a wealth of experience, intensity and discipline to all of the athletes he coaches. He has worked with both developing and high-level athletes in multiple sports, including PGA Tour Pros and MLB All-Stars. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Justin is certified through the NSCA. He has worked at BGGA since its inception in 2014.

Paul Dewland

Paul Dewland

Mental Performance Coach

Paul Dewland joins BGGA this year as the Mental Performance Coach and brings more than 20 years of performance coaching to our student-athletes. Paul has experience working with players from the PGA Tour, European Tour, LPGA Tour, Ryder Cup team members, Web.com Tour, Champions Tour, Symetra Tour, European Senior Tour, PGA Tour Canada, PGA Latino America and several other professional tours. He also has worked with top level amateurs including several National Amateur Champions, Division I and II college players and two National Golf Teams. Paul is a Certified Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (INLPTA).
